10% Give Back Project

At the beginning of October of 2011, I did some “soul searching” about what My Personal Finance Journey means to me and where I see it growing and evolving in the future.

To make a long story short, I decided that since I have a day-job (I’m a chemical engineering PhD graduate student who does Alzheimer’s disease research if you didn’t know) and do not depend on income from blogging as my sole-source of making a living, any income made from this blog would have more significance to me at a personal life values level if I knew that a portion were being given back to the following places:

  • 1) The readers – Obviously, without you here to read my articles and interact with my ideas, there would be no blog in the first place (let alone blog income). As such, it is only fitting that you receive a portion of any blog income.
  • 2) Charitable organizations – If you’ve read my blog before, you know that I’m a big believer in donating a portion of my money to charity. Each year, I donate between 5-10% of my income to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as part of the Bike for MS fundraiser that I do. Beyond the good that is done by donating your money, getting used to contributing to charity is also a good practice to emulate the actions of affluent individuals (T. Harv Eker discusses this in his book, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind).
Because of these considerations, I’ve decided that each month going forward, I’m going to give away 10% of my net, after-tax blogging income to My Personal Finance Journey readers (5%) and to charity (5%). Listed below is how the process will work:
  • After each calendar month passes, I’ll tally up my net blog income and determine what Dollar value correlates to 10%.
  • I’ll post the giveaway, and readers will have ~3+ weeks to enter.
  • Once the giveaway is over, a grand prize winner will be announced, and that winner will then select what charity they’d like to have 5% of my blog income sent to. Pretty cool idea, right?! I’m excited just thinking about it! I hope you are too.

By doing giving away 10% of our blogging income each month, we hope to create a virtuous circle of giving and receiving, where the whole world benefits – readers, charities, and our site.

Listed below are the current and past 10% income giveaways that have been conducted on this site.

Aside from doing a lot of good for creating community on this site and giving back to charity, the 10% income project has started to generate a significant amount of traffic and interest on my site.

Listed below are some of the traffic stats that have been realized for the giveaways that have thus far been concluded. Traffic stats last updated on 5-May-2013.

So, if you are a company or event organizer and are looking to promote your products/event, teaming up with My Personal Finance Journey to promote your product through contributing or sponsoring the 10% income giveaway could be a great way to get the name out about what you offer.

If you’re interesting in discussing possible ideas for how we can team up, just send me an email at the email address listed below. I’d love to hear from you!

Another goal of mine for the 10% Give Back Project is to get other sites, blogs, and/or companies to realize the benefits that can come from giving away 10% of your income and follow suit in this “movement.”

Listed below are some of the benefits that can come from giving away 10% of your income:

  • Increased community on your website and more engaged/interactive readers.
  • Making a real difference in helping the world around you through donating to charities.
  • Increased publicity for your website from media, traffic, and site reader interaction.
  • Networking with other like minded “change-agents” who hear about your giveaway project.

Because of the significant benefits available through donating a small portion of your business income, I’d HIGHLY recommend this 10% Give Back Project to all businesses!

If you’re interested in adopting this idea for your site, feel free to copy the format I’ve outlined here.

Just be sure to let me know that you’re starting it so I can follow your progress/success as well!
